One of Halifax’s most versatile ensembles, and always in high demand, because, frankly, they can play anything, and they do: baroque and classical, twentieth century jazz and swing, klezmer, tango and Latin favourites.
Their performance of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” is a knock out that shows there is more to this music than Freddy Mercury knew. The Rhapsody Quintet plays two concerts, one in Halifax and one in Lunenburg.

Our season opener proudly features Musician-in-Residence Shimon Walt.
Shimon says, “Piano Trios were, and probably still are my biggest love in the world of chamber music. There is something special in the blend of high and low strings with the full range of piano sound. Haydn, Mendelssohn and Brahms… does it get much better?
Each of the pieces on this program also has a very close and intimate connection to my love of music, and each touches a part of me during different times and places in my career. A hint: Israel, United States and Canada.”
Shimon is joined by Pianist Lynn Stodola and Symphony Nova Scotia’s Concertmaster, violinist Robert Uchida.

The cello is often compared in tone to the human voice, and we humans have responded to its sound through song and movement. This concert features eight voices by that count!
Cellist and Musician-in-Residence Shimon Walt, with special guest Allison Angelo, soprano (last season’s Musician-in-Residence) are featured, as are seven other cellists in Bachianas Brasilieras No. 5 by Heitor Villa-Lobos, conducted by Dinuk Wijeratne.
Shimon’s Symphony Nova Scotia colleagues Norman Adams, Laszlo Muranyi and Hilary Brown will join him, as will Evan Wiebe and Kan
Yue, and his students, Benjamin Marmen and Lydia Hansen.
The program also shows the lyricism of the cello in music by Faure, Previn and Saint-Saens (‘The Swan’, with a solo dance performance).
Dancers include Vivika Ballard, Hilary Knee & Rebecca Wolfe. Vivika Ballard will perform the ‘Dying Swan’ as well. The group is KiDanCo, which is the pre-professional company resident at the Leica Hardy School of Dance.

Quartet la Corde, a Dalhousie-based ensemble, was formed in January 2012 and has found early success.
In addition to the mentorship of Prof. Djokic, the quartet participated in Scotia Festival of Music during the summer, where they were coached by various professionals from Halifax and elsewhere, and gained further performance experience.
Representing Nova Scotia at the National Music Festival in August, 2012, the group placed second in Canada in the chamber category.

A fixture at JazzEast, members of ‘Gypsophilia’, Dani and Sageev Oore are classically trained musicians with an astounding range and originality.
Their “Radical Cycle” concert will be the first live performance of their recently released CD. It features an improvisational approach that fuses classical pieces of varying styles to remarkable effect. The radical refers to their adaptation and excerpting of classical songs by composers including Schumann and Brahms into their unique stylings for piano and saxophone.
It might be called ‘musical re-cycling’, and is certain to attract both their jazz fans and those interested in a modern-day take on traditional sounds.
