The Music:

Saturday, February 4, 11 am
Cecilia's Retreat, RR#2, 1199 Oakland Road, Mahone Bay

The program is called Handel's Heroines and features Canadian soprano Jennifer Farrell and pianist Peter Allen.

You will hear a wonderful selection of arias from Handel's masque, opera and oratorio literature, woven together with explanations of the plots of these productions.

The heroines are in turn fickle, flirtatious, sorrowful and joyful, and the music reflects their various moods -- a perfect program on a mid-winter's day in February. As always, brunch will be served following the performance ($20).

Jennifer Farrell appears regularly with professional Canadian ensembles in the fields of oratorio, opera and choral repertoire. In western Canada, Miss Farrell has performed as a soloist with the Vancouver Bach Choir, Music Fest Vancouver, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Voices, the Vancouver Opera, and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.

She has also sung with the internationally acclaimed Vancouver-based chamber choir, musica intima. In Eastern Canada she has appeared as a guest soloist with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, Opera Nova Scotia and Les Jeunesses Musicales du Canada.

While maintaining her solo career, Miss Farrell completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of British Columbia in 2008.

Peter Allen has continually delighted audiences with his artistry, versatility and mastery with music-making. As a concert pianist, he is often heard on CBC regional and national radio and is well known to audiences in the Maritimes and throughout Canada for his captivating interpretations.

He has a number of CDs to his credit, solo as well as collaborations with other musicians. Peter is also a highly respected composer, teacher, and conductor.

He has fulfilled many commissions, the most recent by CBC for a piano concerto called 'Hurricane Juan', world-premiered by Symphony Nova Scotia on their season's opening concert with Peter as soloist in the Fall of 2008.

Peter Allen is an Assistant Professor of Piano at Dalhousie University's Department of Music, a post held since 2005.
